Referencing the text, name 2 positive outcomes and 2 negative outcomes that come from visual electronic media use in childhood. Also referencing the text/research, if you were working with a parent who needed guidance on screen use for children, what information might you share?
According to Broderick and Blewitt (2015), children can exhibit short term attention difficulties after watching violent programming. The more exposure to entertainment programming in the preschool and elementary years, including cartoons was linked to the way children perform in school. Also, early television exposure socializes children’s tastes and building preferences. There are also concerns regarding brain and behavioral development for children two and under.
Some media usage can be positive though. Children using basic computer software and the internet can help them learn and and acquire new information. It can also be beneficial for academic performance.
Parents need to understand the positive and negative sides to screen usage. Children two and under should not be utilizing screens of any type (television, computer, cell phone etc). Parents should also understand that screen usage depending on age and length of time can be beneficial for children.
